Abstract
1) 58 cases of colon injuries, which was treated in the Capital Armed Forces General Hospital, were
reviewed on the primary closure vs exteriorization.
Primary closures were carried out on 30 cases and two-staged operation were carried out on 28 cases.
2) The complications, mortality and the duration of admission were less in the cases of primary
closure than two-staged operation. The morbility was related to the associated injuries and the lag
period from the time of injury to the operation.
3) The advantages of primary closure method were short hospital days, practical economy, less psy
chological effect and less complications followed by two times of operation.
4) The indications of primary closure were as belows; cases within 8 hours after onset, minimal
contamination in the peritoneal cavity, no shock, small colon injuries, and no associated injuries of
major organs.
5) The Ampocillin which was sensitive even to the Gram (-) bacteria was very effective in the care
of colon injuries.
